Airport Drama for Ed

GOING TO THE TOP: Ed, pictured recently outside No.10.

Elder Protections Ed Mullenger made a citizen's arrest when he became suspicious of a man at a London airport.

Ed, tackled the man as he left a WH Smith newsagents at Heathrow Airport's Terminal Two on Thursday evening.

He became suspicious when the man was reaching into his rucksack and talking on his mobile phone.

Ed, of Ely, signalled to a shop assistant but before they could act the man left the shop.

"I stepped in front of him outside the shop and made a citizen's arrest," said Ed. "I didn't hesitate. I would do the same again."

When the manager of the shop arrived, Ed escorted the man to her office at the other side of the airport to await the police.

Ed, who is campaigning for the rights of elderly abuse victims and recently took a petition to Downing Street, had gone to the airport at 9pm to meet a friend and was looking through magazines in the shop opposite the arrivals gate when the incident happened.

"I was standing only a few feet away from the man," said Ed. "I felt he was acting suspiciously."

Ed remembered his training with the French police from when he was living in the country and took action as the man tried to leave.

He later went to Heathrow Police Station where he gave a statement.

Anand Kalyan, 30, unemployed, of Hounslow, Middlesex, has been charged with two counts of theft and one of failing to attend bail for an earlier offence. He was remanded in custody by Uxbridge Magistrates on Saturday and was due to appear again at court (Wednesday)
